# Nuvio vs Stremio

**Nuvio is an alternative client to Stremio, and it uses the same addons.** Both play what Stremio addons find, and neither holds content of its own. Nuvio also has its own plugins, which Stremio doesn't. The differences are in the apps: where they install, how they handle profiles and sync, and how far each has matured.

## The short answer

- **Android phone, Android TV or Fire TV:** try Nuvio. It's free, your addons work as they are, and you can keep Stremio installed alongside it.
- **iPhone or iPad:** Stremio, unless you're happy to sideload. Nuvio has no App Store version.
- **Samsung or LG TV:** Stremio installs from the TV's app store. Nuvio needs developer mode.
- **Usenet from the desktop app:** Stremio, which streams it natively. Nuvio needs an addon for Usenet.
- **Profiles, sync and a home screen you control:** Nuvio.

## Platform support

| | Stremio | Nuvio |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Android, Android TV, Fire TV | Yes | Yes |
| Windows, Mac | Yes | Yes |
| Web browser | Yes | No version listed |
| iPhone and iPad | Limited web version; full app via AltStore PAL in Europe, Brazil and Japan | Sideload only (AltStore or Sideloadly) |
| Apple TV | Sideload only | No |
| Samsung and LG TVs | Yes, from the TV's app store | Developer mode only |

Platform support is the part that changes most often, so check each app's own download page before you decide. The [Nuvio wiki](<https://nuvio.wiki>) keeps install guides for every platform.

## Addons work in both

Nuvio uses Stremio addons. An addon's install link ends in `manifest.json`, and pasting it into Nuvio installs the same addon with the same configuration. Nothing has to be rebuilt or bought again. Our [Nuvio addons guide](<https://docs.elfhosted.com/nuvio/index.md>) has the install steps.

## Where Stremio still wins

- **Maturity.** Stremio has been stable for years. Nuvio is younger.
- **Smart TVs**, where Stremio installs from the app store on Samsung and LG.
- **Native Usenet streaming** in the desktop app.
- **An official iPhone app**, at least in Europe, Brazil and Japan.

## Where Nuvio wins

- **Free profiles with cloud sync**, which Stremio doesn't offer at no cost.
- **Home-screen control**: layouts, and which catalogues appear in what order.
- **Built-in TorBox and Premiumize**, plus Trakt, Simkl and MDBList sync.
- **Pace of change.** It's actively developed, and features land quickly.

## Moving from Stremio to Nuvio

There isn't much to move. Your addons are links, your watch history lives with Trakt or Simkl if you use them, and neither app owns your library. Install Nuvio, paste in your addons, sign in to your tracker, and you're where you left off. Keep Stremio installed while you decide.

Nuvio's own sync then keeps your profiles, library and addon list the same on every device. If you'd rather that lived on your own server than the Nuvio project's, [Mellon](<https://docs.elfhosted.com/nuvio/#own-sync-server>) is a sync backend for Nuvio that we host for you, for sideloaded builds.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Nuvio better than Stremio?

On Android phones and Android TV, many people prefer Nuvio for its free profiles, sync and home-screen control. Stremio is more mature, installs from the app store on Samsung and LG TVs, and has an official iPhone version. Both use the same addons, so you can install both and compare.

### Can I use my Stremio addons in Nuvio?

Yes. Nuvio uses Stremio addons. Paste each addon's `manifest.json` install link into Nuvio under Settings, Addons, and it works with the same configuration.

### Does Nuvio sync with Stremio?

Not directly. Each app keeps its own addon list. Watch history can follow you between them through Trakt or Simkl, which both apps support.

### Is Nuvio on iPhone or Apple TV?

On iPhone and iPad only by sideloading, since Apple removed it from the App Store and TestFlight. There's no Apple TV version of Nuvio, and Stremio is only available on Apple TV by sideloading. See [Stremio on Apple TV](<https://docs.elfhosted.com/guides/media/stremio-on-apple-tv/index.md>) for what works there.

### Nuvio vs Jellyfin: what's the difference?

Jellyfin is a media server: it plays a library you store, or one presented to it. Nuvio is an app that plays what Stremio addons find. They can meet: [Stremio addons in Jellyfin](<https://docs.elfhosted.com/guides/media/stremio-addons-in-jellyfin/index.md>) explains how.

Which addons to install is the same question in either app: see the [Nuvio addons guide](<https://docs.elfhosted.com/nuvio/index.md>) and the [recommended addons](<https://docs.elfhosted.com/stremio-addons/guide/recommended-addons/index.md>).
