Nuvio vs Stremio

Both apps do the same job: they play what addons find, and hold no content themselves. They share an addon format, so the same addons work in either. The differences are in the app, not the ecosystem.

This page exists because most comparisons of the two are wrong about one important thing, covered below.

The short answer

• On an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, stay with Stremio. Nuvio is not available to you.
• On Android, Android TV or Fire TV, Nuvio is worth trying. It is free, your addons come with you, and nothing stops you keeping both installed.
• If you stream usenet directly from the desktop app, stay with Stremio, which is the only one of the two that does it natively.
• If you want profiles, sync and a customisable interface, Nuvio gives you more of those than Stremio does.

Platform support

This is where other comparisons get it wrong. Several popular pages, including ones written to sell VPN subscriptions, still list Nuvio as available on iOS. It is not. If you are shopping for an app to use on an iPhone or an Apple TV, that single fact decides the question, and no feature table changes it.

Addons work in both

Nuvio reads Stremio addon manifest URLs. An addon you already use is a URL ending in manifest.json, and pasting it into Nuvio installs the same addon with the same configuration.

Nothing needs to be rebuilt, rebought or migrated. If you are trying Nuvio, install it alongside Stremio, paste your addons in, and decide afterwards which app you prefer.

Where Stremio still wins

• Apple devices, as above.
• Native usenet streaming, which Stremio's desktop app supports and Nuvio does not. It is a niche feature, but if it is your setup, it is decisive.
• Maturity. Stremio has been stable for years. Nuvio is younger, and behaves like it in places.
• Smart TV apps, where Stremio ships for Samsung and LG.

Where Nuvio wins

• Free multi-profile cloud sync, which Stremio does not offer at no cost.
• Interface customisation: layouts, themes and control over which catalogues show.
• Pace of change. It is being actively developed, and features land quickly.

What about migrating?

There is not much to migrate. Your addons are URLs, your watch history lives with whichever tracking service you use, and neither app owns your library. Install Nuvio, paste your addon manifests, sign in to your tracker, and you are where you left off.

Keep Stremio installed while you decide. They coexist quite happily.
