Remux: a Jellyfin-compatible server for addon content

Remux is a media server that answers the Jellyfin API, so Infuse, Swiftfin, Strand, Fusion and the official Jellyfin apps connect to it as if it were Jellyfin itself. What sits behind that API is not a folder of downloaded files: it is your Stremio addons, your WebDAV shares and your own storage, resolved when you press play.

How do I use Remux with AIOStreams?

You give Remux your AIOStreams manifest URL as an addon source, and Remux builds libraries from it. On ElfHosted the two arrive together: the Remux subscription includes an AIOStreams instance, Debridge, and bundled TorBox and Usenet provider accounts, so there is nothing to sign up for separately and nothing to wire across two providers.

That is the whole integration. Remux is not limited to AIOStreams either: it will take several Stremio addon manifests at once, and it reads WebDAV shares and local files in the same libraries.

Who is Remux for?

Remux earns its keep when more than one person is watching, or when your content comes from more than one place. If you are one person with one AIOStreams instance, AIOStreams' own Jellyfin support does the Jellyfin-app part for nothing extra and you should start there.

Three situations where Remux is the right answer:

• A household. Your partner wants their own continue-watching row, and your kids should not be shown the whole catalogue.
• Mixed sources. Addon content, a WebDAV share and your own files should appear in one library, not three apps.
• Curation by rule. You want shelves that maintain themselves, rather than folders somebody has to keep tidy.

What can Remux actually do?

Real users, not one shared login

Remux keeps its own user database. Each account gets its own watch state, its own continue-watching, and its own view of the library. If you already run a Jellyfin server, Remux can import your users and their data so the household does not have to start over.

Libraries that are rules

A Remux library is a filter, not a list. Build one from tags, catalogs, popularity, release year and more, and it stays current on its own. Layer per-user content exclusions on top and the same sources render as a different, scoped library for each account, which is how you get a kid-safe shelf without maintaining a second library by hand.

More than one source, in one place

• Multiple Stremio addons at once, rather than a single aggregator
• WebDAV shares
• Local folders from your /storage mounts
• Music, on its own pipeline rather than bolted onto the addon path, including remote sources

Track selection that isn't guesswork

Remux pulls probe data from RemuxDB, so audio and subtitle tracks come from real codec and language information rather than being inferred from a release name. Your player picks the right track instead of a plausible one.

Sources, libraries, users and playback all live in Remux's own admin UI. There is one place to change things and one place to see what is going on.

I’ve been using this service for a while now, and honestly, it’s a game-changer compared to anything else I’ve tried for managing my media library. The support is fantastic—super quick, and if the staff aren’t around (which rarely happens), the community steps up right away. I can’t imagine going back to any other platform.

(responding to a discussion re the cost of ElfHosted vs mainstream streaming / self-hosting):

I didn't know that the goal of this project was to compete with large companies running/renting entire DCs. I was under the impression that the goal of this project was to manage the updating of almost selfhosted applications on a shared platform with other users. Basically, be my sysadmin for me.

That being said, paying for services is the 'easy button'. There is a real world cost incurred for the time saved. Time is money. Time is the most valuable currency that exists. Once time is spent, it's forever lost, one cannot retrieve it again (yet). In my mind, there are 3 options for use of time with respect to: mainstream, selfhosting, elfhosted.

• mainstream - my time is valuable and I don't want curated content and I don't care what content that I have the ability to consume. I only like what's popular.

• elfhosted - my time is valuable, I want my own curated content without being forced to browse past the same damn entry 500 times just to find out that I can't watch the movie I want because it's not available in my current location or was removed last week from mainstream providers.

• selfhost - I care about costs and I have nothing but time to waste or I want to learn about the backend of the systems involved. I'll pay for my own VPS/homelab, electricity, manage the OS, manage app updates, figure out how to make the apps talk nice to each other, create my own beautiful frontend.

I know how much my time is worth, does that reddit poster know how much their time is worth? Without knowing what you are worth, you can't make effective capital expenditures with respect to the time it will take to recoup the capital.

I know I don't need elfhosted at all for my use case. I choose to stay with elfhosted because it's my 'easy button'. It's an efficient capital expense for the amount of time it saves me managing my own hardware, apps and saves me electricity costs. I'm also in a situation where I don't have upload bandwidth from my home to serve HD content to myself remotely. If I lived back in a city, I would still be here. My time is worth $$/hr.
