The maintenance problem

Most home media stacks start small. A Docker Compose file, a mini-PC or NAS, a reverse proxy, a few apps, and maybe some storage mounts. Then the quiet jobs accumulate:

• keeping Docker images and host packages current
• fixing containers after upstream app changes
• maintaining DNS, reverse proxies, TLS certificates, and port forwarding
• monitoring uptime while you travel or sleep
• checking backups and restoring configs when disks fail
• dealing with home upload bandwidth, CGNAT, ISP changes, and power cuts
• remembering which path mapping each app expects this month

None of that is the part people were excited about. It's platform maintenance.

What ElfHosted takes over

ElfHosted runs the application layer for you:

• Open-source media apps: Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, request managers, and supporting tools from the ElfHosted catalog.
• Infrastructure: Kubernetes, containers, routing, TLS, monitoring, and service health.
• Routine app operations: provisioning, updates, restarts, and configuration backups via ElfBot.
• Reliable public access: each app gets a managed HTTPS URL without exposing your home network.
• Supportable defaults: apps are provisioned with the ElfHosted paths, companion services, and storage integration points they need.

You still configure the apps through their normal UIs. The difference is that the host, reverse proxy, container runtime, and uptime chores are not your problem.

What stays under your control

ElfHosted hosts apps; it does not take ownership of your library or accounts.

• Storage is bring-your-own: Real-Debrid, Usenet via NzbDAV, or rclone-compatible cloud storage such as Hetzner Storage Box, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, or S3.
• Accounts stay yours: Plex accounts, provider accounts, indexer accounts, and cloud storage accounts remain under your control.
• App configs are portable: Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby all have migration or backup paths.
• Your old setup can run in parallel: the safest cut-over is to trial ElfHosted while your home server still exists.

That split is important: ElfHosted is the managed platform, not a magic content source.

Common paths away from self-hosted maintenance

Keep your library, move the apps

If your media already lives on cloud storage or a provider account, this is the cleanest move. Attach the same storage/provider to ElfHosted, restore or rebuild app configs, and let the apps run from ElfHosted instead of your hardware.

Start with the migration guide if you're coming from unRAID, TrueNAS, Synology DSM, or Docker.

Keep the media server, drop the home server

If Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby is the part you care about, move just that layer first:

• Run Jellyfin without Docker

Keep the Arr workflow, drop the Docker upkeep

If your workflow depends on Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, and companion apps, use ElfHosted as a managed home for that app stack:

• Run Sonarr and Radarr without Docker or a home server

When ElfHosted is a good fit

ElfHosted usually makes sense when:

• the home server is reliable enough to keep the library, but annoying enough that you want the apps elsewhere
• the monthly subscription is worth less than the time you spend maintaining Docker, proxies, storage paths, and monitoring
• you want family access without exposing your home network
• you travel, move, or have unreliable home power/upload
• you want the same open-source apps, but not the platform chores

If running the stack is still the fun part, keep self-hosting. If the maintenance has become the hobby tax, ElfHosted is the escape hatch.

I’ve been using this service for a while now, and honestly, it’s a game-changer compared to anything else I’ve tried for managing my media library. The support is fantastic—super quick, and if the staff aren’t around (which rarely happens), the community steps up right away. I can’t imagine going back to any other platform.

(responding to a discussion re the cost of ElfHosted vs mainstream streaming / self-hosting):

I didn't know that the goal of this project was to compete with large companies running/renting entire DCs. I was under the impression that the goal of this project was to manage the updating of almost selfhosted applications on a shared platform with other users. Basically, be my sysadmin for me.

That being said, paying for services is the 'easy button'. There is a real world cost incurred for the time saved. Time is money. Time is the most valuable currency that exists. Once time is spent, it's forever lost, one cannot retrieve it again (yet). In my mind, there are 3 options for use of time with respect to: mainstream, selfhosting, elfhosted.

• mainstream - my time is valuable and I don't want curated content and I don't care what content that I have the ability to consume. I only like what's popular.

• elfhosted - my time is valuable, I want my own curated content without being forced to browse past the same damn entry 500 times just to find out that I can't watch the movie I want because it's not available in my current location or was removed last week from mainstream providers.

• selfhost - I care about costs and I have nothing but time to waste or I want to learn about the backend of the systems involved. I'll pay for my own VPS/homelab, electricity, manage the OS, manage app updates, figure out how to make the apps talk nice to each other, create my own beautiful frontend.

I know how much my time is worth, does that reddit poster know how much their time is worth? Without knowing what you are worth, you can't make effective capital expenditures with respect to the time it will take to recoup the capital.

I know I don't need elfhosted at all for my use case. I choose to stay with elfhosted because it's my 'easy button'. It's an efficient capital expense for the amount of time it saves me managing my own hardware, apps and saves me electricity costs. I'm also in a situation where I don't have upload bandwidth from my home to serve HD content to myself remotely. If I lived back in a city, I would still be here. My time is worth $$/hr.
