Mellon

Nuvio is a media app for phones, tablets and TVs. It keeps your profiles, library, watch progress and addon list on a backend, so that every device you sign in from sees the same thing.

Mellon is that backend, running on your instance. Sign your apps into it and the account is yours: nothing about what you watch, or which addons you use, leaves your own deployment.

It speaks the same protocol the apps already expect, so no modified app is needed. The sideloaded builds let you point at your own backend; the Play Store and App Store builds deliberately do not.

Mellon is our own backend, not the Nuvio project's. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Nuvio Media. It does not stream or play anything: it stores your profiles, library, watch progress and addon list, and the playing is done by your apps and the addons you install.

How do I use it?

Already using Nuvio? Start here

Do this before you sign in on any of your devices, and there is nothing left to set up afterwards.

1. Open https://your-username-mellon.elfhosted.com/import in a browser.
2. Sign in with your existing Nuvio account. That sign-in goes from your browser straight to Nuvio; the password is never sent to your server.
3. Choose the email and password for your account here. It can be the same email. This is what you will use in the app from now on.
4. Leave "also copy my debrid and metadata keys" ticked unless you would rather re-enter them by hand. A backup never contains keys, so this is the only way they travel.
5. Press the button. Your profiles, addons, library, collections and watch progress move across.

Then open Nuvio, choose to connect to your own server, enter https://your-username-mellon.elfhosted.com, and sign in with the account you just made. Everything is already there.

If you sign in on a device first and migrate afterwards it still works, but you will briefly see a different addon list, and you will need to sign out and back in at the end to pick up what you moved.

Starting fresh

Open Nuvio, choose to connect to your own server, enter https://your-username-mellon.elfhosted.com, and create an account. The app checks the server, warns you that it cannot verify who operates it (it says that about every server that is not Nuvio's own), and then you are set up.

If sign-in stops working

Twenty failed sign-ins for one account inside fifteen minutes and your server stops trying, for that account only, for the rest of the window. Wait a few minutes and it clears by itself. Nothing is locked and nothing needs resetting, and somebody guessing at one account cannot lock anyone else out.

Signing in a TV

TVs get a code instead of a keyboard. The TV shows a short code; visit https://your-username-mellon.elfhosted.com/link on a phone or laptop, enter the code and your password, and the TV signs itself in within a few seconds.

Which app builds work

Desktop, Android TV, and the sideloaded Android and iOS builds can all point at your own backend. The Play Store and App Store builds deliberately cannot, so install the full build from the Nuvio project if the option is missing.

Managing it from a browser

Open https://your-username-mellon.elfhosted.com and everything below is one click away. These pages ask for your Mellon account, the one your apps sign in with. Signing in on one carries to the others, and it stays signed in between visits.

Addons and plugins

/addons holds both, on separate tabs, per profile. Add one by pasting a manifest URL, reorder them so your apps show them the way you want, switch one off without deleting it, or open its configure page. Far easier than typing a manifest URL on a TV remote.

Bringing addons over from Stremio. The same page can sign in to your Stremio account and list what you have there, so you can tick the ones you want. That sign-in happens between your browser and Stremio: your Stremio password is never sent to your server, and neither is the auth key if you use one instead. Stremio addons that cannot travel, and anything already installed, are marked and skipped.

Profiles

/profiles names them, gives each a colour or one of the built-in faces, and adds or removes them up to the app's limit of six. Each profile keeps its own addons, library and watch progress.

Devices

/devices lists everything signed in to your server, apps and browsers alike, and signs any of them out. There is a button to sign out everything except the session you are using, which is the one to reach for if you think somebody else has your password. A signed-out device has to sign in again before it can sync.

Instance settings

/admin is the only page behind your ElfHosted login rather than your Mellon account. Sign-ups live there: they start closed, you open them for as long as it takes to create your account, and they close again by themselves as soon as one is created. Open them again whenever you want to add another person to your backend.

Every new account is created with one addon already installed. One variable changes that, using ElfBot:

Sign-ups are not an environment variable to set. They are a stored setting on your instance, changed from /admin, so that opening them briefly and closing them again does not need a restart.

Seeing what you have been watching

Visit https://your-username-mellon.elfhosted.com/stats and sign in. It shows hours and completion per profile, how much you watched week by week, your most-watched titles, which addon supplied each item you saved, what you started and never finished, and which apps have synced.

Hours are counted from the furthest point reached in each episode or film rather than measured playback, so a rewatch does not add to the total.

This is yours alone. It is computed on your instance, from your own account, and there is no version of this page that reports across accounts.

I’ve been using this service for a while now, and honestly, it’s a game-changer compared to anything else I’ve tried for managing my media library. The support is fantastic—super quick, and if the staff aren’t around (which rarely happens), the community steps up right away. I can’t imagine going back to any other platform.

Before this, I had my own setup with a NUC, NAS, and tools like Sonarr and Radarr. It worked pretty well for a while, and my internet speed was high enough to stream without any buffering. (responding to a discussion re the cost of ElfHosted vs mainstream streaming / self-hosting):

I didn't know that the goal of this project was to compete with large companies running/renting entire DCs. I was under the impression that the goal of this project was to manage the updating of almost selfhosted applications on a shared platform with other users. Basically, be my sysadmin for me.

That being said, paying for services is the 'easy button'. There is a real world cost incurred for the time saved. Time is money. Time is the most valuable currency that exists. Once time is spent, it's forever lost, one cannot retrieve it again (yet). In my mind, there are 3 options for use of time with respect to: mainstream, selfhosting, elfhosted.

• mainstream - my time is valuable and I don't want curated content and I don't care what content that I have the ability to consume. I only like what's popular.

• elfhosted - my time is valuable, I want my own curated content without being forced to browse past the same damn entry 500 times just to find out that I can't watch the movie I want because it's not available in my current location or was removed last week from mainstream providers.

• selfhost - I care about costs and I have nothing but time to waste or I want to learn about the backend of the systems involved. I'll pay for my own VPS/homelab, electricity, manage the OS, manage app updates, figure out how to make the apps talk nice to each other, create my own beautiful frontend.

I know how much my time is worth, does that reddit poster know how much their time is worth? Without knowing what you are worth, you can't make effective capital expenditures with respect to the time it will take to recoup the capital.

I know I don't need elfhosted at all for my use case. I choose to stay with elfhosted because it's my 'easy button'. It's an efficient capital expense for the amount of time it saves me managing my own hardware, apps and saves me electricity costs. I'm also in a situation where I don't have upload bandwidth from my home to serve HD content to myself remotely. If I lived back in a city, I would still be here. My time is worth $$/hr.
