ComicBookWorm Bundle

The ComicBookWorm Bundle is a comics, manga and anime library in one subscription. Two readers, Komga and Kavita, serve the same comics folder to browsers and reading apps. Kapowarr keeps track of every issue in the series you follow and files them with names the readers understand. BookOrbit adds a reader built around Kobo and KOReader sync, and Shoko sorts out anime episode numbering for the media server you already use.

All five apps see the same storage at the same paths, so the folder Kapowarr files into is the folder Komga and Kavita read. Nothing has to be copied from one app to another.

When does the ComicBookWorm Bundle make sense?

  • Your comics are a folder of loose CBZ files and you want them in series, in order, with covers and reading progress.
  • You can't decide between Komga and Kavita. You get both, pointed at the same library, and keep whichever you prefer.
  • You read on a tablet or e-reader and want to pick up where you left off.
  • Your anime library confuses your media server: wrong seasons, missing specials, OVAs filed as episodes.

What's in it?

App Its job in the bundle Sign-in
Komga Comics and manga reader: series, volumes in order, ComicInfo metadata, OPDS and reading apps Its own accounts
Kavita Reader for comics, manga, webtoons and ebooks, with OPDS Its own accounts
BookOrbit Reader for comics, ebooks and audiobooks, with Kobo and KOReader sync Its own accounts
Kapowarr Tracks every issue of a comic series (issue lists from ComicVine), converts and renames to CBZ, files into your library Your ElfHosted login
Shoko Matches anime files against AniDB and hands corrected metadata to Plex, Jellyfin or Emby Its own accounts

The readers and Shoko use their own accounts because reading apps, e-readers, family members and media server plugins need to reach them directly. Kapowarr sits behind your ElfHosted login.

How the apps fit together

Every app in the bundle mounts the same storage:

  • /storage/rclone/<mount>/: cloud storage you attach with magic mounting (Google Drive, OneDrive, S3, Backblaze B2 and anything else rclone speaks). This is where your library should live.
  • /storage/symlinks/: the bundle's own working space, also visible to every app.

The arrangement we suggest is one comics folder that everything agrees on:

flowchart LR
  K[Kapowarr] --> F["/storage/rclone/your-mount/comics"]
  U[Your own uploads] --> F
  F --> M[Komga]
  F --> V[Kavita]
  F --> B[BookOrbit]
  M --> R[Browser, reading apps, OPDS]
  V --> R
  B --> E[Kobo and KOReader]

Shoko works on a separate anime folder and talks to your media server rather than to the readers.

How do I use it?

1. Attach your storage

Set up a magic mount for your cloud storage and create a comics folder on it (and an anime folder, if you use Shoko). Your existing files can go straight in.

2. Claim the readers

Komga, Kavita, BookOrbit and Shoko are not behind your ElfHosted login, so create the admin account in each one as soon as your bundle is ready:

  • Komga and Kavita ask you to create the admin account on the first visit.
  • BookOrbit sends you through a setup page that only you can open while signed in to ElfHosted; see the BookOrbit page.
  • Shoko runs a first-start wizard; see the Shoko page.

Then, in Komga and in Kavita, add a library pointing at /storage/rclone/<mount>/comics. Do the same in BookOrbit if you want it too (its folder picker starts at /storage). Running more than one reader over the same folder is fine: they only read it.

3. Set up Kapowarr

Follow the Kapowarr page: add a free ComicVine API key under Settings -> General, set the root folder under Settings -> Media Management to the same /storage/rclone/<mount>/comics, and choose a naming scheme Komga and Kavita parse well. Then add a volume and Kapowarr fills in the issue list.

New issues show up in Komga and Kavita at their next library scan. Both scan on a schedule you can set per library, and either can be told to scan now from the library's menu.

4. Set up Shoko (optional)

Shoko needs a free AniDB account. Add your anime folder as an import folder with Drop Type set to None, run the first scan, and install the Shoko plugin or agent in your media server. The Shoko page covers each step, and why Drop Type matters. The media server itself is not part of this bundle.

How do I access it?

Everything is on your dashboard at https://your-username.elfhosted.com. Directly:

Use the Komga, Kavita or BookOrbit address in reading apps and OPDS clients.

Signed-in users see their own URLs

The addresses above show the general pattern. Sign in and these become your personal, clickable links.

What it doesn't do

  • No comics, manga or anime are included. Bring your own files.
  • No media server is included. Shoko improves the metadata in a Plex, Jellyfin or Emby server you already run.
  • Storage is yours to attach. A large library belongs on your own cloud storage via magic mounting.
  • Not one login for everything. The readers and Shoko keep their own accounts so apps and devices can reach them.

How do I get support?

  1. Each app's own page (linked above) covers it in more detail, along with its upstream project's documentation.
  2. For your ElfHosted setup, see the ElfHosted support options.
